The Plymouth area will be receiving just over $1 million in federal money over the next two years to help deal with the opioid crisis.
A $496,650 grant from the US Department of Justice will go to Plymouth County Outreach, a coalition of 27 municipal police departments in the county, and the Bridgewater State University Police Department, to work together on opioid issues with the district attorney and sheriff’s offices.
In addition, as part of $8.4 million in grants the Department of Justice recently awarded in Massachusetts, $541,3000 will go to the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office.
The smaller of the grants will be used, in part, to hire two full-time staff members charged with finding and coordinating help for people who need addiction treatment, according to an Oct. 3 press release. The grant also will be used to better collect and analyze data about overdoses in the region, the release said.
“These funds will hopefully go a long way toward helping our Plymouth County residents who have been impacted by the opioid crisis and their families,” East Bridgewater Police Chief Scott Allen said in the release.
