Walter Sweeney

Chief Sweeney began his career with the Hanover Police Department in 1982 when he was appointed to the position of Patrol Officer. In 1995 he was promoted to Sergeant and was assigned to the patrol and detective divisions. In 1997 he was promoted to Lieutenant commanding both patrol and detective divisions. In this capacity he was the Executive Officer for the department. In 2008 he was appointed Chief of Police. Chief Sweeney has served as the Acting Town Manager for the Town of Hanover. Chief Sweeney received a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice at Stonehill College in 1982 and a Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice Administration at Western New England University in 2002. He has completed certificate programs in criminal justice management at The New England Law Enforcement Management Program, Babson College and the FBI LEEDA training. He earned a certificate from the New York HIDTA programs in both narcotics investigations and response to domestic and international terrorism. He is a graduate of the Massachusetts Criminal Justice Training Council Foxboro Police Academy Chief Sweeney serves as the current Secretary/Treasurer of the Southeastern Massachusetts Police Chief’s Association. He previously served as President of the Southeast Massachusetts Detective’s Association from 2001-2004. He is the Past President of the Plymouth County Police Chief’s Association and serves as a member of the Southeast Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Training Committee. Chief Sweeney serves on the Plymouth County Outreach Chief’s Advisory Board. Chief Sweeney is a certified instructor for the Municipal Police Training Committee.
