The brain is our most complex organ, and a critically important one. Neurotransmitters are the vital cogs in the machine that is our brain, relaying the messages that keep our bodies running effectively. However, when we use substances, it disrupts these pathways and interferes with the way the body and brain communicate usually with an overstimulation of serotonin and dopamine. So, in an effort to “correct” this imbalance, our body decreases the natural production of these chemicals, and our bodies become dependent on the substances to regulate the chemistry in our brains. 

 

Low Dopamine = 

  • Fatigue 
  • Depression 
  • Memory loss 
  • Anxiety 
Low Endorphins = 

  • Irritability  
  • Depression 
  • Sleep disruption 
  • Headaches 
Low Oxytocin  

  • Irritability 
  • Poor communication 
  • Anxiety 
  • Sleep distruption 
Low Serotonin  

  • Depression 
  • Confusion 
  • Gastrointestinal upset 
  • Fatigue 

 

But the good news is that our brains can recover, just as we are, and restore the balance of these chemicals within our bodies; but it takes time.  

Here are a few ways to “hack” these happiness chemicals in the meantime: 

 

Dopamine = reward 

  • Complete a task  
  • Do a self-care activity  
  • Eat food  
  • Celebrate a “little” win 
  • Food’s high in tyrosine 
  • Bananas 
  • Milk, cheese, yogurt 
  • Chicken, turkey, fish 
Endorphin = pain killer 

  • Watch comedy, laugh 
  • Eat dark chocolate 
  • Exercise  
  • Listen to music 
  • Food’s high in vitamin C & B 
  • Oranges 
  • Bananas 
  • Spicy food containing capsaicin 
Oxytocin = love 

  • Play with a baby or a pet 
  • Hold hands  
  • Hug  
  • Give someone a compliment 
  • Vitamin D 
  • Food’s high in vitamin C & magnesium 
  • Tomatoes, spinach, avocados 
  • Fatty fish, almonds 
  • Green tea 
Serotonin = mood 

  • Meditate  
  • Run, Swim, Ride a bike 
  • Sunshine  
  • Walk in nature  
  • Food’s high in tryptophan 
  • Eggs, cheese 
  • Pineapples 
  • Salmon 
  • Nuts, seeds
